Some useful tips for English-Hindi translations

  • Do not proceed sentence by sentence. Read the entire paragraph. Understand what is meant to be conveyed to the reader and then proceed with translation of Hindi to English.
  • Literal translation must be avoided.
  • Look for idiomatic expressions and try to understand the meaning behind these and use appropriate equivalent English expressions.
  • Make sure you follow English grammar rules such as the sub-verb-object construction, which is different from that in Hindi.
  • If you cannot do it then engage a bilingual translator familiar with nuances of Hindi and English languages.
  • At a pinch you could use online translation tools but be informed that these may not translate the meaning of idioms and related usages but will give literal translations on which you will have to work to render the true meaning.
